200 to 300 mln farmers to relocate to cities

Chinanews, Oct. 12 - In the next 15 years, 200 million to 300 million
Chinese farmers will move into cities and towns, raising China's urban
population from the current 524 million to between 800 and 900 million.
Madame Tao Siliang, secretary general of the China Association of Mayors,
revealed that according to official statistics, China's middle class only
account for 5.04% of the country's total population and the figure will
reach 45% by 2020, which means some of the farmers to move into cities
will become middle class.
China's urbanization is a major event in the 21st century. With this
process, China will not only be able to create a poverty-free world for
its people, which constitutes one quarter of the world's total
population, but also bring them an affluent life, said Madame Tao today
during the 2005 Asia Pacific Cities Summit being held in Chongqing.
Madame Tao informed mayors from various countries during the summit that
China's urbanization level has been increasing at a speed of
approximately 1% a year. The figure has risen from 18.9% in 1990 to 40%
in 2004 and will reach 60% by 2020. During this period, China will not
only elevate the urbanization level of existing cities, but also build
hundreds of small cities, which will be capable of absorbing 13 to 18
million farmers annually.
All mayors participating in the summit marveled at the astounding speed
of urban development in China. From 1998 through 2004, China made over 2
trillion yuan (USD246.6 billion) fixed asset investment in urban areas,
built 1.6 billion square meters of houses every year, and raised per
capita housing area to 23.67 square meters. 80% urban residents have
their own houses or apartments.
