AIDS insurance on sale in Henan province

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-26 14:30:52

Chinanews, Zhengzhou, Oct. 25 (By He Xiaocong) - News from Henan
subsidiary of Tai Ping Life Insurance revealed that starting this month,
what the mainland insurance industry once viewed as "taboo" of Aids
insurance will soon be offered as a stand-alone product in the Henan
market. It was learned that "Aids Insurance" has a one year coverage
period with a highest payout of 300,000 RMB (US$37,500). Industry
insiders pointed out this move reflected the first breach of a "taboo"
amongst the mainland's insurance industry.
It was learned that this "Aids insurance" to be offered in the Henan
market has been approved by the head office of Tai Ping Insurance. But
because some parts of Henan have high incidence of Aids, the head office
requested strict risk controls when marketing this policy. It was
discovered by reporters that at present, "Aids insurance" can only be
purchased by businesses or work units on behalf of their staff and cannot
be bought by individuals. The primary targets of new clients for this
policy would be the medical and judicial industries and would involve
foreign enterprises and cannot even exclude the entertainment industry.
Because the terms of this Aids policy include payment to Aids victims who
contract the diseases from heterosexual and homosexual contact as well as
from other modes of transmission, there are different views regarding
this policy. Some people worry that because this policy provides coverage
for Aids caused by a chaotic lifestyle, it is a reason for concern.
Others said that because this type of policy can reduce the burden of
some of the insured, it is a more humanistic offering.
It was revealed that through October 24th, Henan still has not one single
work unit that has signed up this type of insurance.

A customer was appreciating the white jade "Tang Priest Pot" in a jewelry
shop in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province on Oct. 15. It is learned that the pot
was carved in a natural white jade from Kunlun Mountains by Zhu Shiping,
a Yangzhou industrial artist. It took him two months to complete it. The
spout looks like the head of the Tang Priest, and the top resembles a
Buddha hat. The Chinese character of "Fo" (Buddha) in the Xing
calligraphy becomes the handle, with decoration of a cassock on the body.
The unique sculpture and its creativeness reached the peak of perfection.

China popularizing higher education

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-14 14:37:27

Chinanews, Oct 13 - Yesterday, the Ministry of Education released China's
educational progress and major reform achievements during the "Tenth
Five-Year Plan" period, showing that the country has laid emphasis on
development of education in rural areas and effectively stimulated
popularization and consolidation of compulsory education. Higher
education has entered a phase of popularization, with the quality of its
people prominently improved.
The rapid development of education has enabled China to initially fulfill
its goal of turning a nation with large population into a nation with
vast human resources. By 2004, people above 15 years old received 8.3
years of education on average, and degree holders reached 70 million. The
average level of education rose from primary school to junior high school.
A spokesperson of the Ministry of Education said that China has given top
priority to development of education in rural areas, having implemented a
series of major projects such as "compulsory education programs in
poverty-stricken areas" and "'Two basic' Education Program in the West"
(to basically popularize nine-year compulsory education and eliminate
illiterate youth and middle aged), and effectively popularized and
consolidated compulsory education. By 2004, coverage of "Two-Basic" for
the population reached 93.6%, and gross enrollment rate in junior middle
schools reached 94.1%. Illiteracy rate of the young and middle-aged was
around 4%, and adult literacy rate was in the leading group among
developing countries with large population.
In 2004, total enrollment of higher education exceeded 20 million,
including 13.33 million college students and junior college students and
820,000 graduate students on campus, 2.4 times and 2.7 times that of
2000, respectively. Higher education recorded a gross enrollment rate of
above 19%, entering an internationally recognized stage of popularization.

200 to 300 mln farmers to relocate to cities

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-13 14:18:09

Chinanews, Oct. 12 - In the next 15 years, 200 million to 300 million
Chinese farmers will move into cities and towns, raising China's urban
population from the current 524 million to between 800 and 900 million.
Madame Tao Siliang, secretary general of the China Association of Mayors,
revealed that according to official statistics, China's middle class only
account for 5.04% of the country's total population and the figure will
reach 45% by 2020, which means some of the farmers to move into cities
will become middle class.
China's urbanization is a major event in the 21st century. With this
process, China will not only be able to create a poverty-free world for
its people, which constitutes one quarter of the world's total
population, but also bring them an affluent life, said Madame Tao today
during the 2005 Asia Pacific Cities Summit being held in Chongqing.
Madame Tao informed mayors from various countries during the summit that
China's urbanization level has been increasing at a speed of
approximately 1% a year. The figure has risen from 18.9% in 1990 to 40%
in 2004 and will reach 60% by 2020. During this period, China will not
only elevate the urbanization level of existing cities, but also build
hundreds of small cities, which will be capable of absorbing 13 to 18
million farmers annually.
All mayors participating in the summit marveled at the astounding speed
of urban development in China. From 1998 through 2004, China made over 2
trillion yuan (USD246.6 billion) fixed asset investment in urban areas,
built 1.6 billion square meters of houses every year, and raised per
capita housing area to 23.67 square meters. 80% urban residents have
their own houses or apartments.

Quanzhou commemorates Confucius with ancient-style chimes

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-29 17:30:49

At 9:00 a.m. on Sept. 28, Fujian's Quanzhou held an ancient-style
ceremony on the platform of Dacheng Hall in the Confucius Temple for the
2556th birthday of Confucius. The Confucius Temple introduced a complete
set of ancient-style chimes produced on the basis of chimes excavated
from the Mausoleum of Yi, a Warring States (475BC-221BC) duke of the
State of Zeng (now Suizhou), in Hunan. This is the first time for
Quanzhou to commemorate Confucius with performances of traditional
Confucian ceremonial music.

Crude oil import to hit 130 megatons in 2005

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-11 13:50:30

Chinanews, Nov. 10 - China's Vice Minister of Commerce Wei Jianguo said
at today's China Petroleum Forum 2005 that China's crude oil import is
predicted to reach 130 million tons this year. China tapped 136 million
tons of crude oil in the first three quarters of 2005, increasing 4.2%
over a year earlier. In the same period, the country's crude oil import
reached more than 90 million tons.
Liang Shuhe, deputy director general of the foreign trade department of
the Ministry of Commerce, said that import volume of crude oil this year
is expected to grow about 5% compared with last year's 120 million tons,
dropping sharply by 30 percentage points. In the first nine months, China
imported 93.96 million tons of crude oil, rising 4%. Import volume of oil
products amounted to 23.23 million tons, falling 16.4% year on year. The
country exported 5.46 million tons of crude oil, growing 27% over a year
earlier. Export volume of oil products stood at 11.55 million tons,
jumping 38% compared with the same period last year.
With the continuous increase of crude oil import, China suffered great
losses due to international oil price hike. Sinochem Corporation vice
president Li Hui said that in 2004, international oil price hike hindered
China's GDP growth by about 0.9 percentage point and caused US$8.6
billion more forex expenditure. In the first nine months of this year,
oil price hike in the international market cost China more than US$10
billion forex expenditure. Such hike contributed 0.16 percentage point to
China's consumer price index growth and 1.45 percentage points to
producer price growth.

Nov. 1 - A senior official with the State Forestry Administration says
the number of wild animals and plants in China is on the rise, due to the
country's efforts in protecting their habitats.
Head of the administration's wildlife protection department, Zhuo
Rongsheng, made this comment Monday in a press conference in Beijing.
The official noted the number of natural reserves in China has topped
1600, some 760 more than in 2001, which helps protect more than 100
endangered species, including giant pandas and golden monkeys.
He added that the number of over half of the wild species in China has
been steadily increasing.

Flocks of tourists visited Huguang Guild Hall to retrospect their "roots"
on Oct. 23, 2005. The repair project started in Dec. of 2003, cost 110
million yuan (US$13.56 million), and opened to the public on Sep. 30 in
2005. The Guild Hall covers an area of more than 12,000 square meters,
making it the largest ancient guild hall existing in China. Through
numerous cultural relics and historical records, the guild hall tells
people the spectacular migration from Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong and Guangxi
to Sichuan in the Late Ming (1368-1644) and the Early Qing (1616-1911)
dynasties more than 300 years before.
